What is Body Fat Percentage (BFP)?
Body fat percentage (BFP) represents the proportion of fat mass relative to total body weight. Unlike weight or BMI, it provides a more accurate estimate of body composition by distinguishing fat mass from lean mass (muscles, bones, organs). It is a commonly used indicator to assess physical condition and overall health.
BFP vs BMI — What's the difference?
BFP
BFP goes further by estimating the actual proportion of body fat. Two people with the same BMI can therefore have very different body fat percentages.
BMI
BMI (Body Mass Index) is based solely on weight and height, without accounting for the distribution between muscle and fat.
Formulas used to calculate BFP
BFP is generally estimated using mathematical formulas based on BMI, age, and gender. The most commonly used is the Deurenberg formula, recognized for providing a reliable estimate in adults. These formulas give an approximation and do not replace precise medical measurements (DEXA, professional bioelectrical impedance).emplace pas des mesures médicales précises (DEXA, impédancemétrie professionnelle).
BFP interpretation by category
Athlete :
Very low fat mass with a high proportion of muscle mass. Lean, high-performing physique typically resulting from intensive.
Fitness :
Good balance between muscle and fat mass. Healthy physical condition with frequent athletic activity.
Average :
Standard body composition corresponding to the population average. Generally good health, with no marked excess or deficit.
Very HIgh :
Significant body fat rate presenting an increased risk for metabolic health. Often associated with a sedentary lifestyle and dietary imbalances.
Élevé :
Excess fat mass relative to lean mass. May have a negative impact on health and physical condition over time.
Frequently Asked questions
Everything you need to know about the Body Fat Percentage calculator
The BFP calculated here is an estimate based on recognized formulas such as the Deurenberg formula. It provides a good overall indicator, but does not replace more precise medical methods such as DEXA or professional bioelectrical impedance.
BMI is based solely on weight and height, while BFP estimates the actual proportion of fat mass. In athletes or muscular individuals, BMI can be misleading whereas BFP gives a more accurate picture of body composition.
Improving your BFP requires a combination of regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and consistent tracking over time. The goal is not just to lose weight, but to reduce fat mass while preserving muscle mass.
