BMR vs TDEE

BMR is resting burn. TDEE is total daily burn including movement and training. Nutrition plans almost always start from TDEE, not BMR alone.

BMR

Calories to sustain vital functions at rest (often estimated with Mifflin-St Jeor). It is the largest slice of daily expenditure for many people, but not the whole picture.

TDEE

BMR × activity (plus real-world adjustment). Includes NEAT, exercise and digestion effects. This is the baseline for surplus or deficit targets.

Coaching workflow

Estimate TDEE → set deficit/surplus → track weight 2–4 weeks → adjust. Calculators help the first guess; adherence and trend data finish the job.

Perguntas frequentes

Is eating at BMR a good fat-loss strategy?

Usually too aggressive and ignores activity. Prefer a moderate deficit under TDEE with protein and lifting preserved.

Why does estimated TDEE fail sometimes?

NEAT drops, tracking error, water weight, or wrong activity factor. Use the estimate as a start, then adjust to the scale trend.

Takeaway

Do not put clients “on BMR calories” as a diet. Program from TDEE, then refine with real weight and adherence data.
